The Forged Prince The Chronicles of Tethera Book 1 eBook Michael Laird
Sometimes i want only to veg out with a pleasant adventure. This book is definitely YA or even younger, but it has enough interesting characters and story to entertain me pleasantly. I liked the dog who became a war horse and the female bard who became a bird. I liked Moriganna the slightly delusional sorceress . And who could not like young Llew, level-headed beyond his years, not to mention Helgar the tame Northman and Hafgan the Dwarf? Superficial? yes. More or less predictable? indeed. But also delightful. No teenage angst. Lots of action and adventure. Good dialogue and a pleasant and resourceful band of buddies. i suppose it is really 4 stars, but the pleasure I got from reading it makes it deserve five.

The Forged Prince The Chronicles of Tethera Book 1 eBook Michael Laird Reviews
I was hesitant at first, since the author admits this is his first novel but I was pleasantly surprised as I very quickly began caring about the young protagonist. Additional characters are added gradually and are easy to get used to.
I could wish each was a bit further developed, especially Llewellyn, but when they are dialoging with each other they sometimes made me laugh out loud because they can be pretty humorous when there isn't something trying to kill them right at that moment. Got to love Helgar the barbarian, he's a bit of a stereotype but on him it looks good.
I guess it's understandable that some of them don't get as much air time as some of the others as the book is already on the long side and is just packed already with stuff going on. Hopefully their chance to shine is still coming.
We spend a third of the book watching Llew get trained up from an orphan peasant into something starting to get a bit dangerous and I started to worry that might be the whole book, but then he gets the opportunity and just runs hog wild across the land and it’s a place where anything can happen.
I also had the feeling there was a lot more backstory than the author ever showed us. It wasn't stuff that had to be there but even so . . . Don't get me wrong, I like that. Maybe he wrote and then cut it out or maybe it's being saved for future books. All the same, I've got to go do some more googling on celtic mythology because I think some of it might be there.
I cheated and looked and I still can't tell if Llew, our young hero, for example, is based on Lleu Llaw Gyffes (or his irish version, Lugh) or on Pryderi. It could go either way and, either way, I'm worried about him next book. There is no sign of Gwydion yet tho, and Math was a long time ago so maybe it will be okay. They mentioned Blod in his future tho and if you know anything about the Malbinogi, that's scary.
Okay, I love this stuff. It really felt something like Prydain books but for big kids and grownups with more action and a little less hand-wringing. Still no sex or swearing though there is what feels like quite a bit more violence but its not gratuitous and we don't get disgusting Game of Thrones style descriptions of the carnage and gastric upset and everything else which, frankly, I can do without.
Some of the writing seems a little more convoluted than it needs to be and I noticed a couple of typos and a repeated word. Hopefully the author will make lots of money on this one and hire a proofreader for his next installment or maybe even go back and fix this one because it feels like something people might still be reading fifty years from now.
I picked this up because it looked like the sort of book I adore. Unfortunately, I found it poorly written, banal, and trite, with stereotyped characterization and bad plotting.
Can't wait for the next book in the series!
I really liked this book.
I really enjoyed reading the story. I read a lot of fantasy and mysteries. I am always looking for a new author and new stories. I like sequels - so I am looking forward to the next installment.
Nice solid story of a young man coming into his destiny. Enjoyed that he had to work for his ability instead of waking up a super hero. I'm not sure that I understand all of the dynamics between the death lord, deceiver queen, and the rest of the ruling classes.
Not being a fantasy fiction reader, I was very pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. The setting is interesting, the characters developed, and the story kept me turning the pages. I read the whole book in one sitting and found myself wishing the other books in the series were already available.
Having strong female characters, even though not the protagonist, gave the story a depth not always found in a first novel. Impressive foray into authorship. Hopefully there will be more books, in this series or others, for me to enjoy in the near future.
