Starting Now A Blossom Street Novel Debbie Macomber 9780345528810 Books

The Blossom Street series has been a favorite of mine and I looked forward to this new edition. As it is, however, this latest novel fell far short of my anticipation. Although the others have had substance and charm, this reads as if it were written for and by a fifteen year old. The characters were underdeveloped and there was little or no plot, just a very predictable and sugary sweet ending. I missed the characters who came together to knit and share their heartaches and dreams at "A Good Yarn". Sadly, this book, although pleasant enough, just does not belong on Blossom Street. What a big disappointment! I just can't understand all the five star reviews!!

Starting Now A Blossom Street Novel Debbie Macomber 9780345528810 Books Reviews

Another wonderful Blossom Street book. To put your life on hold in hopes to achieve a certain level of success in your work life neglecting your personal life is a hard choice to make. Fortunately for the main character one of her mentors has some wonderful advise and she turns her life upside down. No one would ever think a hard nosed attorney would volunteer to rock babies when she has never rocked one in her life. The children get a huge benefit , but she gets so much more. A wonderfully written novel that is hard to put down and a bummer when it was over. I can't wait to finish the series. KEEP WRITING.
No doubt about it, Debbie Macomber knows how to put together a good story with some surprises along the way. Sometimes we just need an enjoyable, lighter read without the turmoil and drama that other more serious books hand us. In Starting Now, I could actually visualize the central character, Libby Morgan, living on "the fast track to success" when the brakes are put on and her life changes dramatically. Her world evolves into new relationships and experiences that help shape her and motivate her in different directions.

One of the things I appreciate about the author is that she almost always adds an Epilogue and doesn't leave the reader with questions unanswered. She really finishes the story. Maybe Libby Morgan will show up in the next Blossom Street book.

I would recommend this book and will probably read it again someday when life is "trying" and I need a "feel good" story to lighten my day.
I was hooked the minute I started reading this story. It was a page turner from the beginning. I loved the rocky beginning of the relationship between Phillip and Libby. It was so heartwarming to see the relationship between Libby and Ava unfold. I, too, lost my mother to cancer as a teenager. I could relate to Libby and Ava in their loss. Lovely summer read.
Libby has a successful job as a top notch lawyer in a high profile law firm and she is working to make partner. In the meantime, her marriage to Joe Wilson has ended and she has no idea why or does she even care? Husband walks out due to her lack of being there. She is so busy with her career she has not had time to morn the end of her marriage. After putting her job first the firm decides to lay her off. She is all alone. No one to comfort her. Now she must get a life. While she is laid off she does. She knits caps for pre mature babies, befriends two girls one of them 13 and pregnant, and meets Mr. Right again. Libby has become a person again instead of a machine like before. She has feelings. Then Libby is offered a job again and her job becomes number one leaving her new life in the dust. People who love her are left behind as her job becomes number one and the people she loves retreat to the very bottom of her list. So the question is? Can a women in the 21 first century have it all?
Debbie Macomber hooked me years ago with the Blossom Street series, in which she sketched deep characters intertwining their lives in ways which kept you clamoring for the next installment. This "Return to" novel is about an inch deep, making one wonder if the author's proven history simply opens the door no matter what. It's a formula romance novel more than anything else, and lite reading, if your goal is to get finished fast. One possibly unintended success in this book was a skillful and truthful dispelling of the myth that women can "have it all". We have a right to a career, but this novel clearly depicts what happens when a high-powered fast-track professional desires to meld home life with husband + children + friends + physical fitness + volunteer work + leisure activities. Something's gotta give and it's not usually pretty.
I love the characters in Debbie Macomber's books and when she does a series she keeps adding new characters. This is no exception! She adds a new character , Libby along with a host of characters from previous books in the series. Libby a lawyer in a big firm is working hard to make partner when she is laid off with an admonition to"get a life" She gets plenty of opportunities to improve herself and she falls in love along the way. A well throughout story line. A page Turner for sure.
Romance as a genre has come to mean soft core porn more often than not. Choices for those who don't care for steamy sex scenes in books are limited and often faith based (nice genre, but if it's not your faith, doesn't quite hit the spot.) I wonder how the author of the typical romance would respond to knowing some of his/her readers just skip all those torrid love scenes. All that writing and work for nothing.
However, Debbie Macomber always does a good job of writing romance without gratuitous sex and while there may be a message, she doesn't hit you over the head with what's behind her message.
She does her usual fine job with Starting Now. Career driven attorney learns there is more to life after losing her career. We are back on Blossom Street, with its familiar cast of characters, a good device Debbie uses in many different series, building up characters and relationships as the main focus. Our heroine learns how to connect to people and likes herself more as a result. And yes, there is a romance that goes through the satisfying roller coaster ride one expects from a good romance, lots of romantic tension and sensuality -- just stopping short of the bedroom door.
The Blossom Street series has been a favorite of mine and I looked forward to this new edition. As it is, however, this latest novel fell far short of my anticipation. Although the others have had substance and charm, this reads as if it were written for and by a fifteen year old.
