well Enzo and the fact that you can't go any lower than one star. I am not going to tell you that I am one of those people who HAVE TO finish a book. I'm just the opposite in fact. I'm kinda up there in years and have thousands of books on my shelves (and in the cloud) that I probably won't get a chance to read. I said that to impress upon you how unusual it is for me to finish a book I was definitely NOT enjoying.I am normally entertained by Owen's writing. Her Summoning series is one I have read several times so I
was very excited to see she was beginning this Ghost Seer series...excited enough to pre-order the first three titles in the series. Well, that was the only excitement I have experienced with this series. I delayed reading this title until it was almost time for the third title to drop so I would have a few books to enjoy one right after another. All that means now is I can't even return the second title for a refund. Thankfully I am in time to cancel the third pre-order! The only reason I finished reading Ghost Seer was so I could write a review. (Yes, I am one of those people who don't believe reviews should be posted if the reviewer did not finish the book).
I have NEVER disliked a main character as much as I did our seer and her love interest. I normally insist on extensive character development in order to continue reading a title. In this case I found myself wishing that Owens would spend more time fleshing out the car, a tree, the furniture...anything or anyone besides forcing us to get to know the two main characters any better. Throughout the book we are treated to Clare's whining and hypocrisy as well as her juvenile boyfriend's whining and horniness. As the story begins we meet Zach who is mourning the loss of his career as a cop because of an on-duty injury which left him with a 'crippled foot and ankle'. We get to hear about that injury and how it ruined his life throughout most of the book, ad nauseam. Unfortunately for the reader Zach decides to leave Montana, and the memories of his life pre-injury behind, and move to Denver where we get to meet Clare. When we meet Clare she is on her third day of denying that she can see ghosts, something she continues to do for most of the book in one form or another. Clare 'inherits' her seer talent from her great-aunt Sandra, along with a fortune and the ghost dog, Enzo. Enzo is the best thing in this book so if you choose to read it you have him to look forward to. Ah yes, back to Clare.
Prior to great-aunt Sandra's demise there was already family money and trusts which caused Clare to develop a not very favorable impression of her parents. You see, because of the family money and trusts they don't work, preferring to spend their lives flitting about enjoying the lifestyles of the very rich. Clare sees that as a character flaw but somehow doesn't see a correlation when she quits her job after being named her aunt's sole heir. Her case is totally different because after all, she leaves her job because someone could use that paycheck she no longer needs. For some reason it just annoyed me she never attributed the same logic to her parents unemployed state, just chose to look down on their behavior as their lack of a work ethic. We never learn exactly how much money Clare inherits. We know it is enough that she can leave behind her small hot box of a house (no A/C folks) and buy another for 2.5 million in cash without putting a dent in the pile. Despite that she is too cheap to hire a car and driver when her visions make driving dangerous...for her and the unfortunate pedestrians. She actually gripes about how much the visits to the psychologist cost (whom she begins seeing shortly after she staring seeing ghosts)
Okay so now we get to the part of the review where boy meets girl and all the reasons they are attracted to one another. The prime reasons Zach is drawn to Clare are; being thrilled that Clare doesn't seem to notice that he is'crippled', he is stronger than she and his boy parts jump to attention whenever he thinks about her. I mean, how much deeper can a love connection get than someone being too well mannered not to stare at your physical disability and being available for booty calls whenever the urge hits a guy? Clare is attracted to her keeper because he is available to go along for the ride when she is following through on her seer duties and she doesn't seem to have dated much in the past. Does it matter that he kicks her to the curb in front of her new neighbors when she dares to actually speak about the ghosts she sees and her new psychic 'gift'. Nope, not to Clare it doesn't.
Go ahead and stretch the above out for 300+ pages and that's the book for ya. I don't think I've ever encountered two more whiny people. Whine, *itch, and moan because they didn't think their lives were perfect. In the past when people have expressed an intense dislike for main character(s) in a book I would always view it as a positive. To my mind the author(s) had done an excellent job in creating the character if they became so real that the reader had such intense feelings for someone who didn't actually exist. Okay that belief got smashed to smithereens. These characters weren't well fleshed out. They were just annoying and boring. Oh how I had to force myself to open this book every day. As with most avid readers, I normally finish a book within a day. This one took me over a week and each session felt like punishment. I am stuck with the second title in the series and actually debated reading it...for about a minute. I found myself saying, oh Ghost Layer must be better than Ghost Seer because it got a higher rating. Riiigghhtt. This title has a rating of 4.0 while that one earned 4.2. Of course when you adjust for the number of reviews each title has, then more people actually liked this book better (I knew that statistics class would come in handy one day.😱). I truly hope more folks than not find this review helpful because I feel as though I threw myself on the grenade just so I could write a review of the book. I would not be surprised to learn that the Ghost Seer series is something Owens wrote when she was first getting started as an author and it is being published because of the success of her Celta series. Surprised no, disappointed yes. I believe Owens is better than what I read in this book. I probably will read Ghost Layer...right after I finish the other 12,000+ titles currently in my library. Of course that presupposes that I won't buy any additional books between now and then, which I just DON'T see happening. I would never tell anyone not to read a book. I am saying there are a lot of better books out there. Happy reading.

Why?
I liked that the power came to Claire with strings attached. I liked that it wasn't easy, it still wasn't easy by the end of the book. I liked that there were consequences if she didn't accept the power both to herself and to others. I liked that she came to regret not being on better terms with her "crazy" aunt (and haven't we all been in the position of wishing we had taken the time to be closer with a releative after it was too late?) I like that both the heroine and the hero are flawed and don't just jump into bed with each other (or even each other's arms). I liked that the book came in a mass paperback size. I like the 'dog'.
If you read/collect Robin D. Owens (and if you don't, why aren't you?) this book and this series belongs on your shelves.
Robin's Celta series can't be beat, but this series looks to be great, too. I can't wait for the next book. This is a great paranormal, with a strong, human hero, a heroine that has to make some hard decisions, and plenty of peril. The hero Zach has to fight through losing his vocation as a lawman as a result of a mistake made by his partner, his sheriff's department, and himself. He has lost mobility in his leg and cannot work in law enforcement, unless it is a desk job. The heroine has inherited a family ability from a great aunt that forces her to see ghosts from a certain time period. She has to accept it or be driven mad and to her death. Of course, she finally accepts it or the series wouldn't be a series! There are wonderful supporting characters in the story, and my personal favorite is the talking ghost dog;)
Clare is a logical, every thing in its time and place person, who accepts her inheritance of millions from her weird Aunt but can not accept her talent of seeing and speaking with ghosts. Ghosts are not real so it must be stress. But what's going on with the talking ghost dog? Zach is a wounded, alienated, angry ex-deputy from Montana trying to accept that his career is over and that he will never work in law enforcement again. Both have dysfunctional families and neither appear to have overcome their families' emotional distances.
When these two meet, they are both in the midst of great changes, emotional turmoil and full of self doubt. While I wanted both characters to move on with their lives, I appreciated the struggle and backsliding. I have trouble believing in characters that go through tragedy and a few days later are madly in love. The story moves slowly at first giving us the backstory on the characters and their motivations. I enjoyed the exploration and education that Clare and Zach are going through and will definitely read the next book in the series.
As the first book in a new series I will give this book the benefit of the doubt even if it isn't quite as tight as I might like. I love Robin Owen's books... and if this had been anyone other than Robin I'm sure that many of the reviewers would have raised their ratings. This is not Celta, nor is it from her Enchanted series – it's a set up for a new series and first books can be a bit hard to swallow as the author sets up an entire new story line. The preview for the next one, Ghost Layer (which will be available in Sept), actually looks very interesting and I will certainly be buying it — it's already on my wish list.
That said, I found this book very enjoyable. It's a combination mystery and reluctant ghost buster... and I loved the twist of an unexpected inheritance of both money and an unwanted talent. Like others I got a bit tired of being smacked about the angst of having to walk with a cane and getting slammed with a talent you didn't want but overall I liked the book and enjoyed reading it! The story flowed for me and had some unexpected twists that I enjoyed... I have no reservations recommending this book.
