This book was happily unexpected, in a sea of similar story lines flooding the YA/New Adult market. Piper, Ash, and Lyre make a powerful, fun trio with an uncertain future. This wasn't the all powerful heroine that flicks her hair and everything is perfect. This is a flawed heroine who would fail without the help of her friends. She's definitely not a Damsel in Distress, and she holds her own in the story, but there would be no happy resolution without the help of Ash and Lyre. All of the characters were flawed to some degree and they each had to deal with the fallout as a team when those flaws were revealed. And this is no insta-love, and not really the ever-present love triangle, but rather a slow build of attraction and affection that leaves you wanting to see more of those interactions, more of that attraction. The story moves quickly, but plausibly. One of my favorite things about the story is the characters react in ways that make sense. You can see the attraction building and growing. You can see the frustration at the situations the trio find themselves in, where everyone is against them. And the characters are drawn well enough, that there's never a time when you're left wondering why the character did something. We know them well enough, it all makes sense.
The world built here is fascinating and well thought out. It's also revealed to the reader in a way that you're not suddenly swamped with a massive info-dump. You're given more than enough information to keep you going and to also know there's a depth to the world that was built rather than a flimsy facade. At no point did the story drag from the need to catch the reader up to speed.
Like I said - a happily unexpected story that stands out in a sea of sameness. I couldn't wait to read the second story, to catch up on the next set of adventures!

Chase the Dark Steel Stone Book 1 eBook Annette Marie Reviews
Having read the Spell Weaver series first, Lyre's personality change was (even though expected) brilliantly portraited without losing his inner strength. I actually enjoyed his more relaxed and funny side. Oooh and I was so glad this book featured Ash too as his dangerous, brooding, mysteriousness captured my attention from the very beginning. The continuation of Ash and Lyre's partnership from the previous series was also a welcome bonus, which then extended to include Piper. Piper was a surprise. Her sense of right and mad fighting skills without any magic were a welcome change from all the other powerful magical characters and she's indeed a magnet for trouble and deadly situations.
A beautiful, magical story about friendship, trust and determination irrespective the odds. The interesting trio makes a very effective and complementary team. The story line flowed effortlessly full of non-stop action and further unexpected events due to unintended consequences of prior actions. I loved the interactions between the characters and the slow build of attraction between certain parties was perrrrrrrrfect.
What a great start to a new series which left me wanting more and more and more!
Chase the Dark is the first book in the YA urban fantasy Steel & Stone series.
At first, I thought, here we go again A young bratty heroine complaining about how life is so unfair and a serious need to grow up, the typical flirty guy and his tall, dark and emo best friend, and an instalove triangle. What I got instead was a speedy read urban fantasy with amusing characters, NO instalove, fast-paced action and an intriguing world filled with daemons and other supernatural creatures.
Living in a world where magic talks, Piper has to rely on her fists to do her talking. All she wants to become a Consul and she works hard every day to earn the respect of her father. When she's asked to essentially babysit a couple of daemons visiting the Consul on the night of the biggest political event of the decade, she's annoyed to no end. As it turns out, it goes south and Piper is left to trust her instincts and two daemons to survive long enough to clear her name and that of her father.
Feisty, emotionally vulnerable, yet with an inner fire that won't let her back down, Piper is a kick-butt heroine. Combined with Lyre and his harmless flirting (after all he IS an incubus) and Ash doing his brooding emo raging, they make an interesting trifecta as they face danger together.
While it is YA, it doesn't strike me as extremely immature unlike a lot of other books in the YA UF genre. I think the lack of instalove helps that. Although some of the scenes get a little intense, it doesn't crossover into adult territory. However!! Let me say that again...However!! This is not a love triangle, nor is it a reverse harem story. If you like that sort of thing, great, but this is not it. With enough heat to keep it interesting but not enough to distract from the storyline, the dynamic between the three is a lot of fun.
With a ton of action, fight scenes and paranormal baddies, Chase the Dark is an engaging urban fantasy. It was a well thought out calculated balance between furthering the plot, character engagement, well-written fight scenes, and the romantic tension. I had a hard time putting this one down.
